This blog is a collection of my (quasi) daily thoughts. I'm Rachel - a 26 year old working in NYC as a web designer & developer for a social networking company. I’ve been told that: I read like a monster, I’m an indiscernable music liker and my red velvet cupcakes are awesome. Also, I’m addicted to bags.

some good reads II

6 August 2009

It’s been almost two months since my last book reviews post and Carina indirectly reminded me that I should probably catch everyone up on my latest reads.

still alice Still Alice by Lisa Genova
Such an incredibly moving book. Offhand I can think of a couple books/movies that deal with Alzheimer’s but as was mentioned in the author’s notes, this disease is rarely portrayed from the viewpoint of the one diagnosed. It’s an amazing read that I would recommend to everyone.

breakfast at tiffany Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote
The whole time I was reading this book, I had the image of the movie and Audrey Hepburn in my head. Which made the book a little less enjoyable for me because in the end, I preferred the movie (and that doesn’t happen often). I think it’s because Audrey’s potrayal of Holly Golightly was so much more likable in comparison to the book. Still a good read though.

the prophet The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Even though I could easily see why this book is “one of America’s most purchased and beloved books,” I just couldn’t immerse myself in it. Probably because it’s poetry (written in prose form) and while I like reading poems as individual pieces of writing, I’ve never been a fan of entire books of poetry.

important artifacts Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton
I just finished this book yesterday and if the long title doesn’t peak your interest, the format of the book should. It basically shows how one couple’s relationship evolves (meeting to end) through the auctioning off of their personal effects. It’s literally an auction catalog so it’s mostly pictures (with descriptions for each item). But somehow it gives an interesting look into their relationship. Definitely worth checking out.

And with that, I’ve completed the stack of books I had on my desk. Which can mean only one thing – must go to Barnes & Nobles ASAP to restock! Expect more reviews in a month or so.
