review: harry potter & the half blood prince

22 July 2009

I admit, even though I am an avid fan of the Harry Potter series, I was not willing to brave the crazy crowds during that opening week. So I waited until this past Monday morning (10am!) to watch it with my cousins.

My thoughts:

  • Enjoyable. Just like the previous movies, I love how they bring to life the scenes I imagined in my head while reading the books. They really do capture those little details and they get it right. (Attention Twilight – this is how it’s done!)
  • I’ve liked every HP movie to date, which includes this most recent film. But would I say that it’s my favorite of the series? Probably not. At least not from the first viewing.
  • Again, compared to the previous movies, this one kind of dragged at times. But that could be due to the emphasis on all the “romances”. Which was inevitable and important too. But that brings me to my next point..
  • Harry and Ginny. Forget that I always wanted Harry and Hermione to get together and am still a little disappointed that they didn’t.. BUT the portrayal of Harry and Ginny was kind of “eh”. There was a lot of build up in showing their growing feelings for one another (which was good). But we never get to see them in an actual relationship (unlike the books). And.. I kind of wanted to see that.
  • Alan Rickman as Snape is perfection. I can’t imagine anyone else playing him.

Overall the movie was good but in the end, I felt like we, the audience, were being set up for the next two films (two part adaption of “Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows”). Which we will have to wait a long 16 months for.

I agree with all your points. At first I didn’t like it & thought it dragged but that was probably due to the fact that 1) I watched it past midnight and was trying to keep myself awake and; 2) I think I would have appreciated it more if I read the book (which I plan to do but can’t seem to find the time at the moment =/). I think I need to watch it again and this time during normal times LOL. I’ll probably like it more the second time around & yes, Alan Rickman did an AMAZING job!

Can’t wait for Time Traveler’s!!! BTW, I never responded to your text about Audrey Niffenegger’s new book – Exciting!! Hope it’s as good as Time Traveler which I also want to reread before the movie.

@reena yeah i would recommend reading the book before watching it again. it felt like they left out a lot this time. also, watching it before midnight would probably help too =P
