This blog is a collection of my (quasi) daily thoughts. I'm Rachel - a 26 year old working in NYC as a web designer & developer for a social networking company. review: bandslam

15 August 2009

Synopsis: A new kid in town assembles a fledgling rock band — together, they achieve their dreams and compete against the best in the biggest event of the year, a battle of the bands. (imdb.com).

bandslam

Before I get on with my thoughts, I realize that watching Bandslam is a little embarassing to admit. And okay, maybe I am kind of embarrassed but you know what, this movie got an 80% on RottenTomatoes.com, which is why I decided to watch it now instead of waiting for the DVD. Plus I like music movies – whether it’s about a band or a full-fledged musical. I don’t deny it! Ahem. And now, my thoughts:

  • Definitely surpassed my expectations by actually being a good movie. It’s light-hearted (for the most part), fun and has likable characters.
  • First music movie I’ve seen that really delves into ska and reggae. Especially for a movie set in high school, which was a pleasant surprise. The music in general was pretty good though a few songs made me a cringe a bit (Aly Michalka singing “I Want You To Want Me” – please, no.)
  • As I mentioned before, the likable characters: Will (played by Gaelan Connell and reminded me of a young Shia LeBouf), Sa5m (the 5 is silent, played surprisingly well by Vanessa Hudgens), and Will’s mom (played by Lisa Kudrow – Phoebe!!). And rest of the band was pretty great too.
  • Obviously I don’t want to give anything away but there’s a must-see kiss scene. HILARIOUS.

Overall: If you’re in the mood for a fun movie with some surprising good music and heartfelt characters, I (semi-grudgingly) admit this is worth seeing (or at least renting at a future date).
